“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.”

- Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds

Welcome!

If you are reading these words I suspect you or a loved one are experiencing anxiety, depression, problems with focus and concentration, insomnia, addiction, feeling overwhelmed, or any number of other mental health symptoms. Whether you are seeking help for the first time, or have tried literally everything and are still suffering, I welcome you to my practice of holistic psychiatry.

Holistic psychiatry is an alternative to traditional/conventional psychiatry and takes into account the psychological, familial, societal, biological, and spiritual dimensions of health and illness. Rather than merely treating a symptom I will work with you to uncover the root cause of that symptom so that you can achieve wellness. For example, nervous system dysregulation due to unresolved trauma is a root cause of mental illness for many people. Others may need to make changes to their diet and lifestyle. How lonely or connected we feel is another powerful determinant of health.

I find that most people struggling with mental health symptoms have a strong inner critic and lack compassion for themselves. Mindfulness and self-compassion are powerful, evidence-based practices that I often teach my patients.

More than anything, my approach has been shaped by my own experience with anxiety and depression. After years of trialing different medications with limited benefit, I found a therapist who helped me understand my symptoms and myself in a different way. I have since embraced an eclectic approach that draws from Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and attachment theory.

Medications can be a helpful and sometimes necessary tool. However, medications typically do not address the root cause of psychiatric symptoms. I will help you decide if medication is the right choice for you. I am also trained in safe de-prescribing. If you have been on psychiatric medications with limited benefit I can help you taper off and explore other healing modalities.

About Me

I have been interested in psychology for as long as I can remember and chose it as my college major. I then went to medical school at University of Toledo College of Medicine with a plan to specialize in psychiatry. Since completing my residency at Ohio State University, I have worked in various inpatient and outpatient settings prior to opening my own practice in 2017.

My approach is collaborative, creative and respectful. I strive to meet my patients where they are and show up with humility, honesty, humor and compassion. In addition to my study of psychopharmacology, I have spent the past several years exploring the work of physicians and healers who offer a more holistic perspective on mental health including Gabor Mate, Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra and Tara Brach.

After spending 12 years in Florida, I now live in northern Michigan in the same small town that I grew up in. In my free time I enjoy reading, paddle boarding, skiing, hiking, trying new restaurants, craft projects, and spending time with family, friends and my Jack Russell Terrier, Stella.

Services

  • Initial Psychiatric Evaluation

During this 60 minute session I gather information about your current and past struggles and the broader context in which they have developed. I will ask about your childhood and various life stages, relationships, educational and occupational history, spiritual life and more. To the degree that you are comfortable we will begin to explore past trauma and core beliefs, which can be defined as your most central ideas about yourself, others and the world. For example, many people suffering from anxiety or depression hold core beliefs such as “I am not good enough” or “I cannot trust others.” We will also explore your physical health and lifestyle, including diet, exercise and habits.

At the conclusion of this evaluation I may recommend one or more of the following: Psychotherapy, medication, nutritional supplements, lifestyle modifications, yoga, meditation, laboratory testing, or other modalities.

    Price: $375

  • Follow-up Visits

Follow up visits may be 30 or 60 minutes depending on your preference. Some patients see me on a weekly or bi-monthly basis for psychotherapy. Others see me every month to every three months and work with a separate therapist who I collaborate with. My approach is extremely flexible and we will determine together what frequency of follow up works best.

    Price: $175-300

  • Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy can be helpful for the treatment of depression, anxiety and other conditions. We can explore whether this may be a good option for you.
